Hanover Symphony Orchestra
Making Hanover a better community, one concert at a time!
Founded in 1995, the Hanover Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is a non-profit, volunteer orchestra dedicated to fostering the love of music through entertainment, encouragement and education.
A small group of community leaders, led by Maestro Larry Kuntz, began with a dream of developing an orchestra for the community – a place where gifted musicians from the area could share their talents with the entire Hanover community. That dream became a reality. The inaugural concert on November 5, 1995 featured Handel’s Overture to the Royal Fireworks Music, Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, and Verdi’s Triumphal March from Aida.
Throughout its history, the HSO has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community through benefit concerts. Organizations that have benefited from these concerts include the Greater Hanover Area Red Cross, Hanover Area Council of Churches, Hanover Area Literacy Council, Hanover Public Library, and the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center.
As a part of its mission, the Hanover Symphony Orchestra established a scholarship program in 1996, which later transitioned into a student fellowship program, and has recently reverted back to a scholarship program. In 2017, the program was renamed the Walter F. Janusz Memorial Scholarship Program in honor of our beloved President who served the HSO from 2002 until his passing in 2007. As of the start of our 223-2024 season, 20 college scholarships, 21 summer music camp scholarships, and 2 fellowships have been awarded.
Hanover Symphony Orchestra members, have come from all walks of life: professional musicians, teachers, doctors, dentists, bankers, select advanced high school players, apprentices and even a NASA engineer! Throughout the years, they have performed with such world-class guest artists as soprano Karen Bureau, cellist Nancy Baun, narrator George Matthew, pianist Greg Thomas, movement artist Dan Kamin, and violinist Mark Wood.
